Eleven people, including five children, were killed while several others were injured when a Munenzva bus was involved in a horrific road traffic accident on the N1 highway in South Africa overnight.

The crash occurred between Trompsburg and Edenburg in the Free State Province, although details surrounding the circumstances leading to the accident were still sketchy.

Emergency services attended the scene and rushed injured passengers to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Authorities confirmed that 11 people lost their lives in the accident, among them five children, making it one of the deadliest crashes involving a passenger bus in recent months.

The identities of the deceased had not yet been released last night as authorities worked to notify next of kin.

Family members with relatives believed to have been travelling on the bus have been urged to contact Munenzva representatives or the nearest hospitals for information on their loved ones.

The cause of the accident had not been established, with investigations underway.
