Alleged triple murder suspect Ndodana Mkhayisi Tshuma is due to appear before the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on Monday as South African authorities move swiftly to extradite him to the United Kingdom.

The 45-year-old was arrested on Friday night in Kensington, Johannesburg, during a joint operation involving the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol).

Tshuma is wanted by British authorities in connection with the deaths of his wife, 42-year-old Nothabo Tshuma, and their two daughters, 15-year-old Natalie and five-year-old Nala. The three were found dead at a home near Bedford in the United Kingdom.

South Africa’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has confirmed that extradition proceedings are already underway and that she will sign the necessary documentation to facilitate Tshuma’s transfer to the UK.

Speaking during a briefing on migration management, Kubayi commended SAPS and Interpol for the swift arrest.

“Once we received the alert from Interpol, we acted swiftly through a multidisciplinary team conducting tracing operations, and the suspect was arrested in Kensington, Johannesburg,” she said.

Kubayi explained that Tshuma had entered South Africa before British authorities had flagged him through international systems.

“At the time he went through OR Tambo International Airport, he had not yet been flagged by British authorities. If he had been flagged, he would not have entered the country,” she said.

The minister said she would sign all extradition documents and requests required under South African law to ensure Tshuma is returned to the UK to face justice.

“We are informed that the teams are working around the clock so that the extradition requests and paperwork are completed in time,” Kubayi added.

National Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the arrest highlighted the strength of cooperation between South African law enforcement agencies and their international counterparts.

“The swift arrest demonstrates the capability, professionalism and operational excellence of the South African Police Service, and the strength of our cooperation with international law enforcement agencies. Let this be a stern warning to criminals across the world that South Africa is not a hideout for fugitives,” said Mathe.

South African authorities say the extradition process is progressing and have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the country does not become a safe haven for wanted criminals.
