Victor Kazembe, popularly known as Coach Rambo – a celebrated swimming instructor, lifeguard, scuba diver and volunteer rescue specialist – is reported to be in stable condition after a motorbike accident on Saturday evening near Norton.
More than US$8700 is urgently needed to cover his initial medical expenses at Avenues Clinic, where he is receiving treatment for head injuries, broken ribs and a punctured lung. Supporters and well-wishers are encouraged to contribute where possible as he undergoes care for these serious injuries.
According to multiple witness accounts and initial reports, Kazembe was riding his motorbike towards Harare when a commuter omnibus (Toyota kombi) allegedly veered into his lane or encroached on his path, leading to a violent collision. The incident occurred around 5pm near a bridge area in Norton. Bystanders, including witness Tawanda Honourable Chisasa, assisted in rescuing him from the scene and rushed him to Norton Hospital for initial treatment before transfers to Belvedere Medical Centre and then Avenues Clinic in Harare. It was described by some as a hit and run.
Early reports raised significant concern, with some describing him as battling for life. Updates from family, close associates and organisations like ZIM Bikers confirmed stabilisation. He is responding well to treatment.
A statement shared by ZIM Bikers noted: “As many of you may already know, Coach Rambo was involved in a motorcycle accident yesterday evening. He sustained serious head and chest injuries and is currently in stable condition while awaiting further medical procedures.” The group appealed for continued prayers and thanked the public for their support.
Coach Rambo has earned widespread admiration across Zimbabwe for his daring volunteer work in water safety, drowning prevention and body recovery operations. For nearly two decades, he has responded to emergencies in hazardous environments, including flooded rivers, dams, sewage filled pools and muddy trenches in Harare and surrounding areas.
Notable recent efforts include leading the recovery of three bodies from a sewage-filled council pond in Budiriro 3 last month and searching for drowning victims in locations like Henry Hallam Dam (Hunyani Dam) in Hatfield. His work often provides closure to grieving families when official rescue services face limitations. He is also a swimming coach and advocate for water safety, running fitness programmes and motivational initiatives.
Beyond rescue operations, Kazembe has gained public attention through philanthropic gestures.
The news triggered an outpouring of support on social media, with well-wishers praying for his full recovery. Some commentary touched on road safety issues involving commuter omnibuses and motorbikes.
As of the latest reports, police had not issued a detailed official statement and investigations continue.
Coach Rambo’s resilience has cemented his status as a beloved public figure. The community monitors his progress, hoping for a swift return to his lifesaving mission. Contributions toward the medical needs would greatly support his recovery.
