LIMPOPO, South Africa – Limpopo’s newly appointed Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, has drawn attention after personally joining officers in a foot chase that ended with the arrest of an undocumented foreign national during an impromptu police station inspection in Modimolle.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Scheepers and members of his management team were travelling through the town as part of unannounced inspections of police stations when they spotted a police officer pursuing a fleeing suspect.

Police said the commissioner wasted no time in joining the pursuit.

“Without hesitation, Lieutenant General Scheepers immediately stopped, got out of his vehicle and joined the pursuit, assisting in the successful apprehension of the suspect,” SAPS said in a statement.

The suspect was later identified as an undocumented foreign national.

SAPS said the incident reflected Scheepers’ leadership style and commitment to supporting officers on the ground rather than directing operations from a distance.

“The incident reflects the Provincial Commissioner’s hands-on leadership style and unwavering commitment to supporting members on the ground while ensuring that the law is upheld,” the police statement said.

The force added that under Scheepers’ leadership, police in Limpopo remain committed to tackling crime and enforcing the law impartially.

“SAPS Limpopo remains resolute in protecting communities and enforcing the law without fear or favour,” the statement added.

The arrest comes as South African authorities continue intensified operations targeting crime and illegal immigration across Limpopo, a province that borders Zimbabwe, Botswana and Mozambique and is a key transit route for cross-border migration.

Scheepers, who officially assumed office on August 1, succeeds Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe and brings nearly four decades of policing experience to the role. His decision to personally assist in the arrest has attracted widespread attention on social media, where many praised the display of frontline leadership.

The arrest comes amid South Africa’s intensified nationwide crackdown on illegal immigration through Operation Vala Umgodi and Operation Shanela, law enforcement campaigns targeting undocumented migrants, illegal mining, cross-border crime and other serious offences. The operations have resulted in thousands of arrests across the country, particularly in border provinces such as Limpopo, which shares a frontier with Zimbabwe. The tougher enforcement has, however, drawn criticism from some human rights organisations, which argue that immigration raids must be conducted in accordance with constitutional protections and international human rights standards.

But the South African government has repeatedly rejected allegations that its immigration enforcement operations amount to human rights abuses, insisting the operations are aimed at combating illegal immigration, organised crime, human trafficking, undocumented cross-border movement and illegal mining.

Pretoria argues that effective border management and immigration enforcement are necessary to protect national security, public safety and economic interests while preserving the integrity of South Africa’s asylum and immigration systems.

It however, maintains that all suspects are treated with dignity and afforded due process.
