The 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup presents South Africa with a rare opportunity to repair strained relations with its neighbours following months of anti-immigrant violence that damaged Pretoria’s standing across the continent, according to tournament organisers.
South Africa will co-host the tournament with Zimbabwe and Namibia, marking the return of cricket’s flagship 50-over competition to Africa for the first time since 2003.
The event comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions triggered by anti-illegal immigration protests in South Africa, which have disproportionately affected nationals from neighbouring countries and other Africans living there.
Local Organising Committee chief executive Qondisa Ngwenya said the World Cup should be used to reshape perceptions of South Africa across the continent.
“In the times we are in now as South Africa, it’s about repositioning ourselves and demystifying the narrative around our role on the continent,” Ngwenya said.
Tournament chairman Trevor Manuel echoed that message at the official launch, arguing that the competition should showcase a more welcoming South Africa.
“When the world looks at South Africa, it should not see closed borders and clenched fists. They should see open arms, vibrant diversity and a shared African dignity,” Manuel said.
For Zimbabwe, the tournament represents both a major sporting event and a diplomatic opportunity.
Relations between Harare and Pretoria have come under the spotlight after waves of xenophobic violence and anti-illegal immigration campaigns in South Africa forced many Zimbabweans to return home, while others have reported intimidation and attacks.
Zimbabwe is expected to host a number of World Cup matches at Harare Sports Club and Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, with the country also investing in cricket infrastructure ahead of the tournament.
The 2027 edition will feature 14 teams playing 54 matches across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with South Africa hosting the majority of the fixtures. The tournament will also mark Namibia’s first time co-hosting a Cricket World Cup.
Beyond the cricket, organisers say the event is intended to promote the African philosophy of Ubuntu , celebrating unity, hospitality and shared identity at a time when regional solidarity has been tested by migration disputes and political tensions.
