Liverpool are closing in on a new long-term contract for teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni as the English Premier League giants move to secure the future of one of their most promising young players.

The 19-year-old, who has enjoyed an impressive breakthrough campaign under Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, is understood to be nearing an agreement with the Merseyside club following months of discussions over an improved deal.

Nyoni’s rapid development has strengthened Liverpool’s belief that he can become an important figure in the club’s midfield for years to come.

Having joined Liverpool from Leicester City in September 2023 as a 16-year-old, the midfielder has steadily progressed through the club’s development system before establishing himself as a genuine first-team option.

His growing influence has been particularly noticeable during the 2026/27 campaign, with Nyoni starting Liverpool’s last two matches and moving towards a significant increase in senior playing time.

Liverpool’s determination to retain the youngster was demonstrated during the previous transfer window when they rejected a £30 million offer from Nottingham Forest for the England youth international.

The decision underscored the club’s confidence in Nyoni’s potential and its intention to make him part of its long-term plans.

The midfielder’s emergence has also been timely for Liverpool, particularly following Curtis Jones’ departure to Inter Milan in August.

Rather than pursue an immediate replacement, the club has placed greater faith in Nyoni’s ability to step up and provide additional options in midfield.

His progress represents another encouraging development for Liverpool’s youth recruitment programme, which has increasingly focused on nurturing young talent capable of making the transition into senior football.

Although born in England, Nyoni has Zimbabwean roots through his parents, making his progress at Liverpool a source of pride for football followers back home.

His emergence is particularly encouraging for Zimbabwean football, which continues to look towards talented players of Zimbabwean descent making their mark in some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
