WASHINGTON — The Democratic Party has won control of the United States Senate and is closing in on a majority in the House of Representatives following the 2026 midterm elections, in a major setback for President Donald Trump.
The Senate victory ends Republican control of the upper chamber and gives Democrats greater influence over legislation, government appointments and oversight of the Trump administration.
Democrats secured important victories in several traditionally Republican states, including Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio, helping them take control of the Senate.
In the House of Representatives, Democrats have also made significant gains, defeating several Republican lawmakers and flipping key congressional seats. The party is expected to take control of the chamber, although some races remain too close to call.
If Democrats secure both chambers, they will control Congress for the remaining two years of Trump’s presidency, significantly changing the political balance in Washington.
The shift would give Democrats control of congressional committees and greater powers to investigate the administration, scrutinise government spending and challenge Trump’s legislative agenda.
The election results reflect voter concerns over the cost of living, inflation, immigration enforcement and the administration’s handling of the war in Iran.
Trump had campaigned for Republican candidates and sought to maintain his party’s control of Congress.
The midterm elections, held halfway through a presidential term, are traditionally seen as a referendum on the sitting president’s leadership and policies.
This is a developing story…
