Prophet Uebert Angel, a close ally of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Presidential Envoy and Ambassador-at-Large, has cautioned against premature succession politics and growing attacks on Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, urging Zimbabweans to exercise restraint and respect the country’s existing political and constitutional structures.

Speaking during a church service on Sunday, Angel criticised individuals and online commentators who have increasingly drawn the Vice President into political controversy, warning that personal attacks and speculative commentary about the country’s political future could undermine national cohesion.

His remarks appear to be directed at the growing political speculation surrounding Zimbabwe’s eventual leadership transition, particularly discussions involving Mnangagwa, Chiwenga and other figures perceived to have ambitions or interests in the country’s succession debate.

Zimbabwe’s succession question has remained a subject of considerable political interest, with competing narratives, factional suspicions and social media commentary often fuelling speculation about the future configuration of power within the ruling ZANU PF party.

Angel’s intervention comes amid heightened public scrutiny of the relationship between the country’s top political leaders, with discussions about succession increasingly finding their way into public platforms, political commentary and online debates.

While political leaders and public officials remain subject to legitimate scrutiny, Angel appeared to draw a distinction between constructive criticism and what he characterised as deliberate attempts to discredit individuals through personal attacks, unsubstantiated allegations and politically motivated narratives.

He urged Zimbabweans not to allow political differences or speculation about future leadership arrangements to distract them from the broader task of national development.

The preacher also emphasised the importance of peace, loyalty to established institutions and responsible public discourse, arguing that the country needed a more constructive national conversation rather than politics driven by hostility and personal animosity.

His comments also raise broader questions about the role of influential religious figures in Zimbabwe’s political discourse, particularly given the longstanding relationship between sections of the country’s religious leadership and the political establishment.

Angel has maintained close ties with President Mnangagwa and has previously featured prominently in discussions surrounding the intersection of religion, diplomacy and politics.

As the country continues to navigate its political and economic challenges, Angel urged citizens to prioritise national development, unity and respect for leadership institutions, rather than allowing speculation about future political outcomes to fuel divisions.
