The implementation of Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Amendment (Number 3) Act (CAA3) must urgently be suspended if democratic and developmental wishes of Zimbabweans are to be respected, an opposition leader has said.
Addressing a press conference in Harare, Tuesday, Hebert Chamuka, President of the People’s Unity Party said the immediate implementation of the CAA3 has created an accountability gap in which politicians are not worried about an immediate election that would force them to embrace pro-people actions.
“With elections having been moved to a distant 2030, politicians are not worried about an electorate to immediately please and are engaging in actions that undermine the wishes and interests of citizens”, Chamuka said.
He cited the clearing of vendors from streets and demolition of houses in some sections of Harare as negative results of the immediate implementation of CAA3.
“Politicians are engaging in these anti-people activities because there is no immediate election to worry about. For the sake of the people, President Mnangagwa must immediately halt the implementation of CAA3 and elections must be held in 2028 as stipulated in the 2013 constitution’’, Chamuka argued.
Blaming local government minister, Daniel and Harare mayor, Jacob Mafume, Chamuka said house demolitions and the “destruction of the livelihoods of vendors” are anti-people actions that would not have taken place if the 2028 elections had not been scrapped.
He said the country’s courts and the police must act impartially to uphold constitutional rights of citizens.
