Eighteen armed robbers have been sentenced to a combined 950 years in prison for their role in a violent raid on the home of the in-laws of prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo.
Harare regional magistrate Musaiona Shortgame handed down the lengthy sentences after convicting the gang over the armed robbery, in which the assailants terrorised the occupants and stole US$74,000 in cash, mobile phones and other valuables.
The court heard that the gang carefully planned the raid before descending on the residence under the cover of darkness. The robbers broke into the property, brandished firearms and held the occupants at gunpoint before demanding cash and valuables.
The victims were forced to surrender US$74,000 to the attackers, who then fled the scene with the money and other property.
A subsequent police investigation led to the arrest of the suspects at various locations. Detectives also recovered part of the stolen property and firearms linked to the robbery.
In passing sentence, Magistrate Shortgame handed down lengthy custodial terms on the 18 convicts, with the combined sentences amounting to 950 years.
The sentences underscore the seriousness with which the courts are treating organised and violent armed robberies, particularly offences involving firearms and the use of force against victims.
The case has attracted significant public attention because of the high-profile identity of the victims and the substantial amount of cash stolen during the robbery.
The convictions are also expected to reinforce calls for tougher measures against armed criminal gangs amid concerns over violent robberies in Harare and other parts of the country.
