Pope Leo XIV has expressed his condolences to the families of victims of the Lake Kariba ferry disaster, saying he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of lives in the tragedy.
The message from Pope Leo adds a significant international expression of solidarity to the national mourning over one of Zimbabwe’s deadliest transport disasters.
The Pope conveyed his message in a telegram sent on Tuesday, August 18, and signed by Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
The pontiff offered his “heartfelt condolences” to those mourning the loss of their loved ones and entrusted the souls of the victims to “the loving mercy of Almighty God”, according to Vatican News.
Pope Leo also prayed for the civil authorities and rescue workers involved in the response to the disaster, while asking God to grant “comfort, healing and strength” to everyone affected by the tragedy.
The ferry disaster occurred on August 11 when a vessel travelling from Kariba towards Chalala capsized on Lake Kariba. At least 93 people, including children, were killed.
Investigations are under way to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the accident. Reports have indicated that the vessel may have been overloaded and that strong winds were encountered during the journey.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared the disaster a national tragedy and pledged government support, including medical and psychological assistance, to affected families.
