The death toll from the Kariba boat disaster has risen to 94, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed on Tuesday, as search and recovery operations continued on Lake Kariba.
The latest figure represents an increase of two from the 92 deaths reported on Monday, with police confirming that two additional bodies had been recovered.
In an update issued on August 18, the police said search and recovery teams remained deployed on Lake Kariba as authorities continued efforts to locate any people who may still be missing and recover bodies from the water.
“Search and recovery operations are continuing,” police said in the latest update.
The disaster has become one of the deadliest transport tragedies in Zimbabwe’s history, surpassing the 1991 Nyanga bus disaster, which claimed 89 lives.
The rising death toll has intensified concerns over safety on Lake Kariba and renewed calls for greater vigilance and enforcement of safety regulations governing water transport.
Search teams have been working in challenging conditions on the vast reservoir.
Authorities have continued to urge members of the public to rely on official information as the operation progresses and the identities of recovered victims are established.
