The Kariba community has been plunged into mourning once again following the death of a 56-year-old Charara resident who succumbed to injuries sustained after being attacked by an elephant near King Fisherman’s Lodge.
The tragedy comes as the resort town is reeling from the devastating Lake Kariba ferry disaster, which has so far claimed 84 lives.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority ZimParks spokesperson Lurkmore Safuli confirmed the fatal elephant attack to National Interest News.
The latest victim has been identified as Edward Jamu, a resident of the Donville Lodges area at National Accommodation and Utilities NAU in Charara.
Jamu was attacked at around 6:25pm near King Fisherman’s Lodge, approximately 40 kilometres from Kariba.
He was rescued and initially taken to Clincare, where he received emergency medical attention, before being transferred to Kariba District Hospital for further treatment.
However, he succumbed to his injuries at around 1:20am.
According to information obtained from his family, Jamu is survived by his wife and five children.
His death has deepened the grief hanging over Kariba following the ferry disaster and has also renewed concerns over human-wildlife conflict in communities surrounding the resort town.
