India have reclaimed the top spot in the ICC Men’s T20I team rankings after their strong start to the three-match series against Zimbabwe, dislodging England from the summit.
The return to number one comes after India won the opening two matches of the series in Harare, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead and giving their ranking hopes a major boost.
India had surrendered the top position to England earlier this month after a difficult tour of the United Kingdom, where they lost the T20I series 4-0. The defeat ended India’s long reign at the top of the global rankings, with England taking advantage of their dominant home campaign.
However, India’s victories over Zimbabwe have quickly restored their position at the summit.
The first T20I saw India cruise to a seven-wicket victory, with teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi making headlines after becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in men’s T20I cricket.
India then produced another commanding performance in the second match, defeating Zimbabwe by 90 runs to seal the series. The result also gave Shreyas Iyer his first T20I series victory as India’s captain.
For Zimbabwe, the series has provided another opportunity to test themselves against one of the world’s strongest limited-overs sides, although the hosts have struggled to match India’s depth and quality.
The two teams are scheduled to complete the series with the third T20I, with Zimbabwe looking to avoid a clean sweep and finish the home campaign on a positive note.
India’s return to the top of the rankings underlines the significance of their victories in Zimbabwe, while the series has also provided valuable international exposure for Zimbabwe’s players as they continue their preparations for future global competitions.
England’s brief spell at number one has consequently come to an end, with India once again occupying the summit of the ICC Men’s T20I rankings.
