Controversial Zimbabwean hip-hop artist Mukudzei Chitsama, popularly known as Holy Ten, was on Wednesday granted US$500 bail after appearing before a Harare magistrate on allegations of raping a 14-year-old girl.
Harare magistrate Jese Kufa released the musician on strict bail conditions pending further investigations into the case.
As part of the conditions, Holy Ten must report to the police every Friday, reside at his given address, surrender all travel documents and refrain from contacting or interfering with State witnesses.
He was remanded to August 7, when the court is expected to receive an update on the progress of investigations.
The National Prosecuting Authority opposed an early finalisation of the matter, telling the court that investigators were still gathering crucial evidence before trial.
Among the outstanding investigations are the compilation of a cross-examination report and the verification of the complainant’s age through official documentation, prosecutors said.
The allegations have sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s entertainment industry, placing one of the country’s most recognisable and outspoken musicians at the centre of a serious criminal case.
Holy Ten, whose music and public persona have often generated headlines and polarised opinion, now faces one of the gravest allegations under Zimbabwean criminal law. A conviction on charges involving the rape of a minor carries severe legal consequences.
The case is expected to remain under intense public scrutiny as investigations continue. The matter returns to court on August 7.
