A 22-year-old man from Gokwe has died after ingesting maize-grain tablets following a US$300 betting loss, police have said.
The deceased, identified as Kuzivakwashe Gava of Village Gava under Chief Madyangove in Chivi, was employed as a cashier at an EcoCash shop at Krima Business Centre.
Midlands Provincial Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said Gava allegedly transferred US$300 from his employer’s EcoCash agent line to his personal account on September 19.
He allegedly used the money for betting but lost the entire amount.
“Gava was employed at an EcoCash shop as a cashier. On 19 September 2026, he allegedly transferred US$300 from the agent’s EcoCash line to his EcoCash line. It is further alleged that he used the money for betting and subsequently lost all the amount,” Mahoko said.
Police said Gava subsequently allegedly consumed maize-grain tablets before seeking medical attention at Krima Clinic.
“Out of pain, he rushed to Krima Clinic for medical attention where he died while receiving treatment,” Mahoko said.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and have appealed to anyone with information that could assist with the investigation to come forward.
Mahoko also urged people facing overwhelming circumstances to seek counselling and other forms of support rather than resorting to self-harm.
