An alleged car thief’s escape plan took an unexpected turn in Marondera after police tracked down a stolen Honda Fit and found the suspect fast asleep inside the vehicle.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police identified the suspect as Precious Ibu, who was arrested following the alleged theft of a Honda Fit from a bar at around 1am on October 18.

Police investigations led officers to a club in Dombotombo, where they reportedly found 18-year-old Ibu sleeping inside the missing vehicle.

His rest was short-lived. According to the police, the teenager woke up and attempted to flee upon realising he was facing arrest, but officers quickly apprehended him.

The Honda Fit was recovered and returned to its rightful owner, bringing the search for the missing vehicle to an end.

In an unusual twist to the alleged theft, the suspect was found right where police least needed to look further, inside the very car they were trying to recover.
