Veteran broadcaster Nelson Grey Gambiza Moyo has been accorded Liberation War Hero status following his death, bringing official recognition only after the former Radio Zimbabwe presenter had died.
Moyo, popularly known as Grey Gambiza Moyo, died on August 20, 2026, aged 68, after decades associated with both Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle and public broadcasting.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa conferred the Liberation War Hero status on the veteran broadcaster ahead of his expected burial on Sunday, August 23, at Plot Number 20, Highbury Farm in Mhangura, Mashonaland West Province.
“His Excellency, the President and First Secretary of ZANU PF, Cde E.D. Mnangagwa, has conferred a Liberation War Hero status to the late Cde Moyo Nelson Gray,” reads part of the notice announcing the decision.
Authorities were subsequently directed to make the usual burial arrangements and facilitate payment of benefits to his family.
Moyo joined Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle in 1977 and travelled to Chimoio in Mozambique before later studying Journalism in Egypt.
He subsequently joined the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), where he worked as a presenter at Radio Zimbabwe, formerly Radio 2, becoming a familiar voice to generations of listeners.
His broadcasting career included presenting Zvisikwa Zvesango and working alongside veteran broadcasters including John Masuku, Joe Panganayi Mukaronda and Sam Sibanda.
He reportedly collapsed at his farm in Mhangura while preparing to travel for a medical check-up.
Moyo is survived by his wife, Rejoice, five children and six grandchildren.
