Zimbabwe is mourning veteran actor William Matenga, affectionately known as Gweshe Gweshe from the popular Gringo television comedy series, who has died at the age of 65.

Matenga died on Saturday, 31 October 2026, at a local medical facility. News of his death has sparked sadness among fans, fellow actors and members of the country’s creative industry.

The actor became a household name through his memorable portrayal of Gweshegweshe in the Gringo productions, where he starred alongside the late Lazarus Boora, popularly known as Gringo. His performance endeared him to television audiences across generations and cemented his place in Zimbabwe’s entertainment industry.

Matenga began his acting career in 1984 and went on to feature in several television and radio productions during his career. He previously spoke about the creative freedom he enjoyed while working with the Gringo production team.

His death comes after previous health challenges that affected his ability to work. In July 2022, H-Metro reported that Matenga was receiving treatment at Chitungwiza Central Hospital for prostate enlargement.

The actor had also been involved in a road accident earlier that year, which affected his ability to continue working. At the time, he appealed to well-wishers for financial assistance to meet his medical expenses.

Matenga leaves behind a memorable contribution to Zimbabwean television, with his portrayal of Gweshe Gweshe remaining one of the recognisable characters in the country’s comedy and entertainment history.

Meanwhile, mourners have gathered at the family home in Zengeza 5, Chitungwiza, where relatives, friends and well-wishers are coming together to offer their condolences and pay their respects.
