Highlanders Football Club has moved swiftly to preserve administrative stability and governance continuity following the tragic deaths of three senior executives in a road traffic accident, appointing an interim leadership team to steer the club through one of the most difficult periods in its history.
The appointments were made on Friday during an emergency meeting of the Highlanders board chaired by board chairman Luke Mnkandla.
Board member responsible for technical affairs, Kindman Ndlovu, has been appointed acting chairman, while Elkanah Dube will oversee administration. Board secretary Matthew Sibindi has been assigned responsibility for the club’s financial affairs.
The leadership changes come after the deaths of club chairman Retired Colonel Kenneth Mhlophe, vice-chairman Sifiso Siziba and treasurer Nkani Khoza, who lost their lives in a road accident on Thursday evening while returning from Kariba, where Highlanders had fulfilled a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League fixture against ZPC Kariba.
The accident, which occurred approximately 58 kilometres outside Bulawayo along the Bulawayo-Gweru Road, also claimed the life of Highlanders supporter Mbalenhle Sibanda.
In announcing the appointments, Mnkandla said the board had acted promptly to avoid a leadership vacuum and ensure the club’s operations continue uninterrupted.
The move highlights the importance of strong governance structures within professional sports organisations, particularly during periods of crisis. Highlanders, one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable sporting brands, faces significant administrative and commercial responsibilities that require continuity in decision-making and financial oversight.
The interim leadership team is expected to oversee day-to-day operations while providing stability for players, technical staff, sponsors and other stakeholders as the club mourns the loss of its senior executives.
Ndlovu, Dube and Sibindi bring extensive institutional knowledge and boardroom experience, having served the club in various governance capacities over the years. Their appointments are expected to provide reassurance to stakeholders that the club remains operationally stable despite the tragedy.
Highlanders indicated that permanent appointments to the vacant executive positions will be made in accordance with the club’s constitution once the mourning period has concluded.
As the club approaches its centenary milestone, the focus remains on preserving institutional continuity while honouring the contributions of leaders who played key roles in guiding one of Zimbabwean football’s most influential organisations.
