The March and March movement has formally requested police protection for its national leadership after the killing of its Gauteng leader, Andile Mvuyelwa Somgxada, in what the group describes as a targeted assassination linked to its anti-illegal immigration campaign.
Somgxada was shot outside his home in Greenfields, Ekurhuleni, on 4 July while leaving for the day. He was rushed to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on 9 July.
The movement’s national spokesperson, Sandile Dube, confirmed the death and highlighted ongoing threats. “We confirm that there’s a number of death threats that we are receiving throughout South Africa for wanting what’s best for South Africans,” Dube said.
March and March secretary Nompumelelo Tenyane said the organisation remains determined to press ahead with its nationwide campaign despite the fears for members’ safety. The group has urged the South African Police Service to safeguard its leaders as investigations into the murder continue.
In a statement, the movement described Somgxada as “a patriotic, dedicated, and peace-loving South African” and vowed to intensify its Thursday protests across the country. Dube called on supporters to honour his legacy by continuing the fight against illegal immigration, drug cartels, extortion, and related crimes.
The killing has heightened tensions within the movement, which has organised widespread demonstrations demanding stricter action against undocumented foreigners. March and March, established in 2024, uses the slogan “Mabahambe” (they must go) and has been linked to broader calls for deportations.
Police have not yet confirmed any arrests in connection with the shooting, though investigations are ongoing. The incident comes amid a series of anti-immigration actions that have drawn both strong support and criticism nationwide.
The movement says other leaders, including in Tshwane, have also received warnings tied to their activism.
