Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplats) has appointed Dr Stanley John Segula as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a leadership transition following the retirement of long-serving CEO Alex Mhembere after 19 years at the helm.

Segula will assume the position on November 1, 2026, following a structured succession process approved by the company’s Board. Mhembere will retire as CEO and executive director but will remain Chairman of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Private) Limited to provide institutional continuity.

Zimplats Chairman Professor Sydney Mufamadi said Segula’s appointment reflected deliberate succession planning and the depth of leadership talent within the company.

He said Segula brought extensive knowledge of the business, strategic judgement, operational experience and capital discipline needed to steer the platinum producer through its next phase of growth.

Mhembere’s departure from the CEO position marks the end of nearly two decades of leadership during which Zimplats transformed into a major integrated platinum group metals producer.

Under his leadership, the company expanded its underground mining operations, processing capacity and investment in renewable energy, while advancing Zimbabwe’s ambitions to increase local beneficiation of mineral resources.

His tenure also saw contributions towards mining skills development, local enterprise growth, infrastructure development and partnerships with Government and host communities.

Mufamadi commended Mhembere for his contribution to Zimplats and the wider Implats Group, saying his legacy extended beyond the company’s operational achievements to include the people, leadership capabilities and stakeholder relationships built during his tenure.

Segula brings more than 30 years of experience across the mining value chain. He joined the Implats Group in April 2008 and has served as Managing Director of Zimbabwe Platinum Mines since November 2015.

During his tenure as managing director, he has overseen initiatives aimed at advancing mechanisation, innovation and operational efficiency.

His academic and professional qualifications include a PhD in Strategic Management and Leadership, a Master of Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Mining Engineering and a Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency. He is also a Certified Professional Engineer.

In a statement, Mhembere said he was proud of the company’s progress and credited its achievements to the commitment of employees and support from the Board, Government, traditional leaders, host communities and business partners.

He expressed confidence in Segula and the wider management team as they take the company forward.

Segula said his immediate priorities would include strengthening workplace safety, improving operational performance and maintaining disciplined investment.

The company said the leadership transition would be supported by a structured handover of executive responsibilities and key stakeholder relationships to ensure continuity in the implementation of its strategy.
