Scottland FC have dismissed head coach Norman Mapeza with immediate effect following the club’s disappointing elimination from the CAF Champions League, bringing an abrupt end to his tenure at the ambitious Zimbabwean champions.
The decision comes just days after Scottland surrendered a two-goal first-leg advantage to Angolan giants Petro de Luanda, losing 3-0 in the return leg on Friday to crash out 3-2 on aggregate.
Although Scottland had appeared firmly in control of the second preliminary-round tie after securing a 2-0 victory in the first leg at the National Sports Stadium, defensive lapses proved costly in Luanda as Petro staged a remarkable comeback to book their place in the group stage.
The setback in Angola appears to have been the final blow for Mapeza, who was appointed to lead Scottland’s maiden CAF Champions League campaign with expectations of making a significant impact on the continental stage.
Scottland travelled to Angola carrying a commanding advantage after second-half goals from Khama Billiat and Knowledge Musona secured victory in the opening encounter, placing the Zimbabwean champions within touching distance of a historic group-stage qualification.
However, Petro de Luanda capitalised on defensive shortcomings to turn the tie around in front of their home supporters at the Estádio 11 de Novembro.
The defeat exposed Scottland’s struggles in dealing with set-pieces, with two of Petro’s goals coming from corner kicks.
Mapeza acknowledged the defensive shortcomings after the match, admitting that his players had failed to maintain the organisation and communication required at that level of competition.
“We failed to defend those set-pieces. They got two goals from corner kicks. We could have done better,” Mapeza said after the defeat.
The coach also rejected suggestions that Scottland had travelled to Angola intending to defend their first-leg lead, insisting that poor execution rather than a defensive game plan had contributed to their downfall.
Mapeza’s departure also comes at a difficult point in Scottland’s domestic campaign, with the defending Premier Soccer League champions facing mounting pressure in the title race.
Scottland have fallen eight points behind league leaders Hardrock FC, although they have two games in hand.
Scottland are also still involved in the Munhumutapa Challenge Cup, leaving the club with domestic objectives to pursue despite their early Champions League exit.
Team manager Peter Ndlovu has been entrusted with leading the team on an interim basis while the club searches for a permanent replacement.
Ndlovu’s immediate task will be to restore confidence within the squad, address the defensive problems exposed in Angola and keep the players focused on the domestic campaign.
Mapeza joined Scottland in November 2025 after leaving FC Platinum, bringing considerable experience in Zimbabwean football and African club competition.
He had established himself as one of the country’s most successful coaches during his time at FC Platinum, guiding the Zvishavane-based side to three Premier Soccer League titles in 2017, 2018 and 2022.
His experience in continental football was considered an important asset as Scottland sought to establish itself among Africa’s competitive club sides.
