A suspected armed robber was shot dead while two others were arrested following a shootout with police in Norwood, Bulawayo, as investigations into five robbery cases in Umguza continue.

The deceased, Average Ndlovu (23), also known as SaAaron, was allegedly part of a gang that targeted homes on October 18 and 19. The two arrested suspects are Austin Nkomazana (23) and Nkosikhona Ndlovu (23).

In a statement on Tuesday, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects were being tracked in connection with the five robberies.

“The suspects were being tracked by the police in connection with five robbery cases which occurred in Umguza on 18th and 19th October 2026,” he said.

In one of the cases, the suspects allegedly attacked a woman and her three children at their home at around 3.45am on Monday, stealing US$2 000 in cash and valuables worth US$2 460.

Police said the suspects were armed with machetes, axes and knives.

In another robbery at around 1.44am on the same day, the suspects allegedly broke into a house, stole US$300 and other valuables before fleeing in the complainant’s Honda Fit. The vehicle was later abandoned after being involved in a road accident.

Nyathi said police officers, assisted by the canine unit, tracked the suspects to a bushy area near Plot 30 in Norwood, where they intercepted them.

“During the operation, the suspects allegedly attempted to attack and disarm the police officers,” he said.

Police said officers fired warning shots, but the suspects continued advancing towards them.

“The officers fired warning shots, but the suspects continued advancing towards them, prompting the police to open fire,” Nyathi said.

Average Ndlovu sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to United Bulawayo Hospitals, where he was pronounced dead on admission. His two alleged accomplices were arrested.

Nyathi warned criminal suspects against attacking officers carrying out their duties.

“Any attempt to attack police officers will be met with a lawful and proportionate response in accordance with the law,” he said.
