A 24-year-old Midlands State University (MSU) student has been shot dead in Gweru in a suspected case of gender-based violence.
Lisedi Nkomo, a fourth-year student, was allegedly gunned down by her baby daddy following a dispute. The man had travelled from Bulawayo, where he lives, to Gweru before the shooting and allegedly fled back to Bulawayo afterwards.
According to an account from one of the roommates who was present, the suspect first collected phones from the rooms and put them in the toilet, allegedly to prevent anyone from calling for help, before proceeding to Nkomo’s room.
“The guy came, took all the phones from all the rooms, put them in the toilet. After that he went to his girlfriend’s room and shot her dead and ran away,” the roommate said.
The suspect was reportedly spotted in Bulawayo on Thursday night after fleeing the scene.
In a further development, the suspect allegedly attempted to visit Nkomo’s family in Bulawayo and asked to take the child who had been staying in the care of the deceased’s mother.
The child and grandmother were taken to a police station for their safety.
Nkomo’s death has raised fresh concerns about gender-based violence and the safety of women in intimate relationships.
