European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe Katrin Hagemann has died suddenly at her residence in Harare, diplomatic sources have confirmed.
Hagemann, 53, reportedly fell ill on Thursday morning and was later found unresponsive at her home by her driver, who had arrived to take her to work.
The circumstances surrounding her death have not yet been officially disclosed.
Diplomatic sources said the EU Delegation and Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade were following established diplomatic procedures before making a formal announcement.
Her death comes less than a year after she assumed the post of EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe.
Hagemann presented her Letters of Credence to President Emmerson Mnangagwa on December 11, 2025, formally beginning her tenure as the EU’s representative in Zimbabwe.
During her relatively brief tenure, she emerged as a prominent voice on Zimbabwe’s economic reform agenda, trade and investment, governance and the country’s engagement with international financial institutions.
At her first media engagement in February 2026, Hagemann described the EU as a reliable partner for Zimbabwe and outlined her commitment to strengthening a trust-based relationship between Harare and Brussels, with particular emphasis on trade and investment.
She also highlighted the opportunities presented by the EU-Zimbabwe Economic Partnership Agreement, under which Zimbabwean products enjoy duty-free and quota-free access to the European Union market.
At the time, the EU said Hagemann had stressed the importance of Zimbabwe’s arrears-clearance and governance processes in restoring investor confidence and unlocking international financing.
Her diplomatic career spanned Germany, the EU institutions and several African countries.
According to her official EU biography, Hagemann was originally from Berlin and began her career with Germany’s Federal Foreign Office, where she worked as a policy officer in the Europe Directorate. She subsequently joined the European Union Council Secretariat in 2006 before moving to the European External Action Service (EEAS) when it was established in 2011.
She served as Head of the Political Section at the EU Delegation to Botswana and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) from 2015 to 2019 before becoming Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to Kenya from 2019 to 2023. She later served as Head of Division for Central Africa at the EEAS before taking up the Zimbabwe posting.
Hagemann brought an unusual academic background to her diplomatic career. She held a Bachelor of Arts from Wellesley College, a Master of Science in Astronomy from Cornell University and a Master of Advanced International Studies from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna.
In Zimbabwe, she was also involved in programmes focused on youth empowerment, gender equality, trade, investment and sustainable development.
In May, she addressed Europe Day celebrations in Harare, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to cooperation with Zimbabwe in areas including trade and investment, climate action, gender equality, governance and youth empowerment. The EU said bilateral trade had reached US$919 million in 2025, with Zimbabwe recording a positive trade balance of US$328 million.
She also participated in the launch of the Sustaining the Gains initiative on gender equality, where she called for stronger implementation of existing laws and policies and greater resources to ensure that programmes benefit women and girls.
Her sudden death is expected to send shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s diplomatic community and the wider EU-Zimbabwe partnership.
The loss comes at a time when the EU and Zimbabwe have been seeking to deepen economic cooperation, particularly in trade, investment, agriculture and governance.
