Tupac Shakur murder: Ex-gang leader sentenced to 40 years to life

Date:

Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis

A Las Vegas judge has sentenced former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 murder of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, bringing a decades-long investigation into one of music’s most notorious killings to a close.

Davis, 63, was convicted of first-degree murder on August 31, 2026, becoming the only person charged and convicted in connection with Shakur’s killing. The sentence means he must serve at least 40 years before becoming eligible for parole.

Shakur, widely regarded as one of hip-hop’s most influential artists, was shot on September 7, 1996, in Las Vegas and died six days later, aged 25.

The rapper was travelling in a BMW driven by Death Row Records boss Marion “Suge” Knight after attending a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand when a white Cadillac pulled alongside their vehicle near the Las Vegas Strip.

Gunmen opened fire from the Cadillac, striking Shakur multiple times. Knight survived the shooting.

The killing remained unsolved for decades, with investigators facing a lack of cooperation from witnesses and the death of several people linked to the case. Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson, Davis’s nephew and the man suspected of firing the fatal shots, was killed in an unrelated gang shooting in 1998 without being charged over Shakur’s murder.

The case took a decisive turn after Davis publicly discussed his alleged role in the killing in media interviews, online videos and a 2019 memoir.

Davis, a former member of the Southside Compton Crips gang, said he had been in the Cadillac and described himself as the person who organised events leading to the shooting. He alleged that the attack was retaliation for an earlier altercation involving Anderson and Shakur at a Las Vegas casino.

Believing he was protected by a 2008 proffer agreement with federal authorities, Davis made statements that later became central to the investigation.

Las Vegas police arrested him in September 2023, nearly 27 years after the shooting.

Despite his death nearly three decades ago, Shakur remains one of the most influential figures in hip-hop, with his music continuing to attract listeners across generations.

Born on June 16, 1971, as Lesane Parish Crooks, he was later renamed Tupac Amaru Shakur. Known professionally as 2Pac, Tupac or Makaveli, he combined music, poetry and acting with outspoken commentary on racism, poverty, police brutality and social inequality.

Raised in a politically active family associated with the Black Panther movement, Shakur drew heavily on his experiences and observations of life in disadvantaged communities.

His songs frequently explored social injustice, family struggles, violence and the search for dignity, helping establish a legacy that extended beyond commercial success.

Tracks such as Dear Mama, Changes, Keep Ya Head Up, Brenda’s Got a Baby, California Love, Ambitionz Az a Ridah, Hail Mary and Life Goes On remain among his best-known works.

His emotionally charged lyrics and ability to combine personal storytelling with broader social commentary have helped introduce his music to younger audiences, including Generation Z.
