It was far from a Hollywood ending for a 34-year-old suspect named John Travolta, who found out the hard way after he was apprehended by Warren Park residents.
Police in Harare have confirmed the arrest of Travolta following a high-stakes Sunday evening robbery at the Warren Park D Shopping Centre that was dramatically foiled by members of the public.
The drama unfolded around 7:00 PM on Sunday when Travolta and an unidentified accomplice—both masked in balaclavas and wielding a pistol—stormed a shop in Warren Park and made off with US$3,813 and ZiG 1,200 in cash.
However, their getaway was cut short. Rather than backing down, alert shoppers and bystanders immediately gave chase, cornering and apprehending Travolta as he attempted to flee the scene. His accomplice managed to slip away during the chaos.
In an official statement detailing the incident, police commended the swift public intervention:
“The suspect, together with his accomplice who is yet to be arrested, allegedly pounced on a shop while armed with a pistol and covering their faces with balaclavas. They threatened the shopkeeper and stole USD3 813-00 and ZiG 1 200-00 before fleeing from the scene. Members of the public pursued the suspects and apprehended one of them,” police said.
Following the citizen’s arrest, police officers searched Travolta and successfully recovered a portion of the loot, amounting to US$1,071 and ZiG 775.
Travolta remains in police custody while law enforcement officers launch a manhunt for his fleeing accomplice and the missing pistol. Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the second suspect’s whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.
