A family in Harare’s Kuwadzana suburb has been plunged into mourning following the heartbreaking death of a one-year-old boy who suffocated after covering his head with a plastic bread wrapper.
The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, October 21, at a house in Kuwadzana Phase 3, claiming the life of a toddler.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident in a statement posted on its official X account on Thursday.
“The ZRP reports a tragic incident in which a one-year-old male toddler died from suffocation after covering his head with a plastic bread wrapper on 21 October 2026 at a house in Kuwadzana Phase 3, Harare,” police said.
What may have been an innocent moment of childhood curiosity ended in tragedy, cutting short a young life and leaving a family to confront an unimaginable loss.
The tragedy serves as a painful reminder to parents and guardians of the dangers posed by everyday household items, particularly plastic packaging, which can cause fatal suffocation when left within reach of young children.
