Bodies of prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo, his wife Lucy Muteke and other victims of Wednesday’s fatal helicopter crash in Marondera are being removed from the crash site as investigations into the accident continue.

The bodies remained at the scene overnight following the crash, which occurred at about 5pm at a farm near Waddilove Mission in Marondera Rural, Mashonaland East.

Forensic experts and investigators were deployed to the site on Thursday morning to examine the wreckage.

Police said some of the bodies were badly burned, making formal identification necessary. Family representatives have confirmed the deaths of Chivayo and Muteke, while authorities continue with the formal identification process.

Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe director-general George Mashababe, who was at the scene with government officials, said preliminary observations indicated that the helicopter’s impact with the ground was followed by fuel spillage and fire.

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
