A Chitungwiza woman died while undergoing an alleged operation to remove a growth from her throat, with police arresting a man accused of performing the procedure without a practising certificate.
Magret Gwamura (51) died while Douglas Mutore (40) was allegedly carrying out the procedure at a house in Unit D, Seke is expected to appear in court in connection with Gwamura’s death.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest in a statement.
According to police, Mutore allegedly used a surgical blade to perform the operation before fleeing from the scene after Gwamura died.
“Police attended the scene and recovered surgical instruments, blood-stained bandages and used medication,” police said.
Investigations later established that Mutore was not in possession of a practising certificate at the time of his arrest.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has since urged members of the public to be cautious when seeking medical treatment.
“The ZRP urges the public to verify the credentials of persons offering medical services and to seek treatment from registered medical practitioners and recognised health institutions,” police said.
Mutore is expected to appear in court in connection with Gwamura’s death.
