Freelance journalist Judith Nyuke, 39, died after being struck by a Geo Pomona Waste Management truck along Harare Drive near Art Farm in Pomona on Saturday, police have confirmed.
The accident occurred at about 3.30pm, according to police spokesman Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
“More details will be released as investigations continue,” Nyathi said.
Nyuke, a specialist court reporter, had previously worked for H-Metro and 263Chat and contributed to several other media platforms.
Her death has sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe’s media fraternity, where she was known for her work as a freelance journalist.
Geo Pomona Waste Management confirmed that one of its vehicles was involved in the fatal accident.
“Geo Pomona Waste Management confirms with profound sadness that one of its vehicles was involved in a fatal road traffic accident that resulted in the loss of life of a member of the public,” the company said in a statement.
The waste management company said it had launched an internal review and was cooperating with the relevant authorities as investigations continued to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Geo Pomona said it was committed to ensuring that the matter was handled responsibly and transparently while respecting the ongoing police investigation.
The company said it would not release further details at this stage out of respect for the deceased’s family and to avoid prejudicing the investigative process.
Police investigations into the fatal accident are continuing.
