President Emmerson Mnangagwa has stirred political debate after declaring that he expects to still be in power in 2035.
The President made the remarks at the official opening of the Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Expo in Masvingo on Tuesday.
Mnangagwa said Masvingo had significant economic potential, citing its wildlife and mineral resources.
“Masvingo Province has vast riches; it only requires intelligent people to utilise these resources. You have animals and gold, and what remains is your knowledge to best utilise these riches,” Mnangagwa said.
He then referred to the future hosting of the tourism expo by different provinces.
“After nine years, when we will be rotating provinces to host this event, I will still be in power,” he said.
The comment immediately drew attention because it appeared to project Mnangagwa’s continued presidency into 2035.
Mnangagwa was speaking in the context of long-term planning for tourism development and investment, urging provinces to use the expo to attract investment, improve infrastructure and develop tourism products.
“It is my expectation that the frameworks and profiles showcased at this Expo will be futuristic and fit for purpose. The momentum generated by this event must translate into lasting tourism infrastructure, investment, product development and an improvement in the quality of life of our people,” he said.
The annual Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Expo brings together tourism operators, investors, policymakers and exhibitors from Zimbabwe and other countries to showcase opportunities in the country’s tourism sector.
While the event focused on tourism development and investment, the President’s remarks about still being in power in 2035 quickly became a major talking point at the event.
