The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) is mourning the deaths of Commissioner Dr Martin Muduva and his wife in what has been described as a suspected domestic tragedy.

The couple died on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, with details surrounding the circumstances of their deaths still emerging.

Unconfirmed reports say Dr Muduva was fatally stabbed with a knife while he was asleep at the couple’s home, before his wife reportedly took her own life. Police investigations into the deaths are underway.

Authorities have not yet released formal findings on the circumstances of the deaths.

The deaths have shocked the human rights community and public service sector, where Dr Muduva was respected for his expertise, leadership and contribution to human rights.

In a statement, the ZHRC Commissioners and Secretariat expressed shock and deep sorrow over the deaths and extended their condolences to the couple’s children and wider family.

“The death of Commissioner Muduva is a devastating loss to the Commission and to all those who had the privilege of working with him,” the ZHRC said.

“The loss of his wife at the same time makes this tragedy even more devastating. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their children, families, relatives, friends, and loved ones during this very difficult time.”

Muduva was appointed a ZHRC Commissioner on December 19, 2024. During his tenure, he contributed to the Commission’s work on human rights, administrative justice and public service.

He was also involved in work examining the intersection between technology and human rights, an area in which he was regarded as having made a significant contribution.

“As the ZHRC family, we mourn together and stand in solidarity with the bereaved families. We pray that they will find strength and comfort during this difficult time,” the Commission said.

Police investigations into the deaths are continuing, while funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
