Zimbabwe has recorded a major medical breakthrough after specialists at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals successfully performed the country’s first bone marrow transplant, bringing a highly specialised procedure previously available only abroad closer to home.
Consultant Specialist Haematologist Dr Moses Chatambudza confirmed the breakthrough in Harare on Tuesday, describing it as a major milestone for Zimbabwe’s healthcare system.
The development is expected to ease the burden on patients requiring bone marrow transplants, who have previously had to travel outside the country for treatment.
Such procedures can cost between US$25,000 and US$75,000, placing them beyond the reach of many Zimbabweans.
The successful transplant could significantly reduce treatment costs and expand access to potentially life-saving care, while also strengthening Zimbabwe’s capacity to provide specialised haematological services locally.
The achievement marks an important step towards reducing the need for patients to seek highly specialised medical treatment abroad.
