The death toll from the Lake Kariba boat disaster has risen to 84 after four more bodies were recovered from the lake on Sunday afternoon.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said search and recovery operations were still underway as authorities continued efforts to locate passengers who remain unaccounted for following the tragedy involving a Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) vessel.
“The ZRP reports that the death toll is now 84 after the recovery of four bodies from the lake this afternoon. The Police confirm that search efforts are still under way in a bid to recover victims identified as missing,” police said in a statement.
The government has declared the incident a State of Disaster and launched investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Preliminary findings have pointed to possible negligence and overloading, with reports indicating that the vessel was carrying significantly more passengers than its recommended capacity.
Families of missing passengers remain anxious for news of their loved ones, while the country continues to mourn those who lost their lives in the disaster.
Authorities are expected to provide further updates as search and recovery operations continue.
