Rwanda has once again been recognised as Africa’s strongest performer in the fight against corruption, reinforcing its reputation for relatively strong public sector accountability and transparent governance.
According to a ranking published by Business Insider Africa, Rwanda is among the top 10 African countries with the strongest anti-corruption performance, followed by countries such as Seychelles, Botswana, Cabo Verde and Mauritius.
The ranking is based on international governance and corruption indicators that assess how effectively countries prevent, detect and prosecute corruption while promoting transparency and accountability.
For Rwanda, the recognition comes as the country continues to receive positive assessments from Transparency International. In the latest Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), Rwanda maintained its position as East Africa’s least corrupt country and ranked among the top performers in Sub-Saharan Africa, reflecting sustained improvements in public sector integrity.
Rwanda’s performance has been underpinned by strong political commitment, digitalisation of government services, robust oversight institutions and strict enforcement of anti-corruption laws.
The country’s anti-graft framework has also been credited with improving investor confidence, as businesses generally regard predictable and transparent public institutions as a key factor when making investment decisions.
While Rwanda continues to outperform most countries in the region, governance experts caution that no country is immune to corruption and stress the importance of continuously strengthening oversight mechanisms, protecting whistleblowers and ensuring accountability at every level of government.
Corruption remains one of the biggest obstacles to economic development across the continent, discouraging investment, weakening public institutions and undermining service delivery.
For Rwanda, however, its continued presence among Africa’s best-performing countries on anti-corruption measures will bolster its image as a destination for investment and good governance.
Most African countries struggle with corruption with the most affected being South Sudan, Somalia, Libya, Eritrea, Sudan, Equatorial Guinea, Burundi, The Democratic Republic of Congo, Comoros and Mozambique.
Rwanda’s President, Paul Kagame, has consistently maintained that corruption is one of the biggest obstacles to Africa’s development, arguing that it is a matter of leadership and accountability rather than culture or geography.
Under Kagame’s administration, Rwanda has built a reputation as one of Africa’s least corrupt countries. The country consistently ranks among the continent’s best performers in global governance and anti-corruption assessments, reflecting strict enforcement of ethics rules, digitalisation of public services and strong oversight institutions.
