Horror as foreign national dies after fall from Durban building amid anti-immigrant tensions

By a Correspondent

A foreign national died after allegedly jumping from the eighth floor of a building on Margaret Mncadi Avenue in Durban, South Africa on Monday night, prompting the South African Police Service (SAPS) to open an inquest.

Police said officers from Durban Central are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The death occurred amid heightened anti-immigrant tensions in parts of South Africa, where vigilante groups have been targeting African migrants.

According to preliminary reports, three foreign nationals had allegedly been staying inside a storage facility in the building for three days after gaining unauthorised access.

On Monday night, the group reportedly heard noises and believed they were about to be confronted. One of the men allegedly jumped from the eighth floor, sustaining fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

One of the other occupants reportedly fled, while the third remained at the scene.

Police said the immigration status and identities of the deceased and the other individuals are still being verified.

The incident comes as anti-immigrant protests spread across parts of South Africa on Monday. Vigilante groups have accused undocumented migrants of taking jobs from South Africans and placing additional pressure on public services, allegations that have fuelled tensions in several communities.

Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm while investigations into the death continue.
