A South African court has ruled that Zimbabwean political activist Wellington Masiwa can be extradited to Zimbabwe, a decision that has reignited debate over the protection of political dissidents and asylum seekers in the region.
Masiwa, popularly known as Comrade Nyokayemabhunu, is a prominent critic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and has publicly opposed efforts to extend the Zimbabwean leader’s rule beyond constitutional term limits.
Speaking exclusively to the SABC from the court holding cells after the ruling, Masiwa said he fears he could be killed if returned to Zimbabwe.
“When I joined politics, I knew that sometimes you can die. I’m ready for everything. If they’re going to kill me, they can kill me. But I’m fearing for my life because I know that I’m dealing with people who are very cruel,” he said.
He added that while he would comply with the court’s decision, he feared the consequences of returning home.
“They are saying I have to go to Zimbabwe. If I go to Zimbabwe, let it be. But that is my fear because I know what is going to happen when I arrive there.”
Masiwa said he believes he is being specifically targeted by Zimbabwean authorities.
“I am the target. They want to take me to Zimbabwe, and what is going to happen when I arrive there is not good. Maybe one day you will hear that Comrade Nyokayemabhunu is dead.”
The ruling has drawn fresh attention to the treatment of political activists in Zimbabwe and raised questions about the balance between extradition agreements and the protection of individuals who claim they face political persecution if returned to their home countries.
It remains unclear whether Masiwa will appeal the ruling or pursue other legal avenues to block his extradition.
