Liverpool midfielder Trey Nyoni has earned praise from his coach and teammates after producing an impressive performance in the Reds’ Carabao Cup victory over Chelsea on Wednesday.

The 19-year-old, who is of Zimbabwean heritage through his parents, was named Man of the Match after an impressive display as Liverpool drew 1-1 with Chelsea at Anfield before winning 6-5 on penalties to secure their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Nyoni delivered a composed display in midfield, completing 65 of his 76 passes, an accuracy rate of 86 percent. He also won four duels, made two tackles and recorded four interceptions.

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola praised the youngster for his performance, highlighting the importance of giving young players opportunities to experience the pressure of knockout football.

“I think he has done very well. Really well,” Iraola said.

“It’s good for the young players especially to have these experiences in cup competitions, where if you lose, you’re out.”

Iraola added that the youngsters had experienced the pressure of competing against a strong opponent, even though they did not take part in the penalty shootout.

“We were losing and then drew level. They weren’t involved in the penalty shootout, but they experienced those feelings. They played under pressure against a very good team,” he said.

“And Trey finished physically in a good place, so well done to him.”

Nyoni’s performance also impressed teammate Rio Ngumoha, who believes the midfielder has significant potential to develop further.

“Trey is top. You guys haven’t even seen him at his very best yet. He definitely has another level to go and he’s only 19,” Ngumoha said.

“The sky is the limit for Trey. I’m really happy he’s getting the minutes to show himself, but also everyone else, how good he is.”

The midfielder’s display adds to growing excitement around his development at Liverpool, where he is pushing to establish himself more firmly in the first team.

His composure on the ball and defensive contribution against Chelsea offered further evidence of his ability to handle demanding senior-level matches.

Liverpool’s victory sends them into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, with Nyoni’s performance providing another positive sign for the club as it continues to develop its young talent.

The Reds now turn their attention to their Premier League campaign, with the teenager hoping to build on his impressive showing and earn further opportunities in the first team.
