Vice President Kembo Mohadi was airlifted to Harare after falling ill during ZANU-PF’s 23rd National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi on Friday, with his condition subsequently stabilising following medical treatment.
Mohadi, who is also ZANU-PF Second Secretary, was assisted from the top table by fellow Vice President General rtd Dr Constantino Chiwenga shortly after proceedings began at Chinhoyi University of Technology.
Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet responsible for Presidential Communications, George Charamba, confirmed the incident in a post on his Jamwanda2 X account.
“Vice President KCD Mohadi was taken ill soon after the commencement of proceedings at the 23rd Annual People’s Conference,” Charamba said.
“He was helped off the top table by his counterpart, Vice President Chiwenga. He was then airlifted to the Trauma Centre in Harare where his condition got stabilised.”
Charamba said President Emmerson Mnangagwa was kept informed throughout the incident.
“His Excellency the President was kept informed all the time,” he added.
Mohadi’s unexpected departure saw ZANU-PF National Chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri deliver his vote of thanks on his behalf following Mnangagwa’s official opening address.
In the speech, Mohadi backed proposals to align ZANU-PF’s constitution with Constitutional Amendment No. 3 and endorsed Mnangagwa’s extended mandate, placing the contentious constitutional proposals at the centre of his message to delegates.
The developments unfolded as thousands of party delegates gathered under the theme “From Resolutions to Results: Consolidating Economic Development and Deepening Economic Empowerment Towards Vision 2030.”
While Charamba confirmed that Mohadi’s condition had stabilised, he did not disclose the nature of the illness.
