Police in Bulawayo have urged parents to protect children from alcohol abuse following reports of Grade Seven pupils attending “pens down” parties where excessive drinking is a concern.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said some pupils who recently completed their final examinations were organising parties where alcohol consumption was taking place, in some cases in the presence of their parents.
“They are hosting parties called ‘pens down’ and they are drinking, some even in front of their parents,” said Inspector Msebele.
She urged parents and guardians to take responsibility for their children’s welfare and ensure that minors do not consume alcohol, which is prohibited by law.
“We are calling on parents to look after their children and not allow children under age to partake in alcohol. It’s not allowed by law,” she said.
Inspector Msebele also warned liquor traders against selling alcohol to minors, saying those found violating the law risk losing their liquor licences.
The concern comes as Grade Seven pupils begin their long school holiday after completing their final examinations, leaving them with an extended period away from the classroom as they await their results and prepare to enroll for Form One.
Police are urging parents and communities to remain vigilant during the holiday period to protect children from alcohol abuse and other risky behaviour.
