The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has dismissed reports circulating on social media that Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba (pictured) has resigned from his position.
In a statement issued on Monday, national police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a video claiming that Mutamba had stepped down was fake and had been generated using artificial intelligence.
“The ZRP has noted with concern a fake video circulating on social media alleging that the Commissioner-General of Police Stephen Mutamba has resigned from his position,” the police said.
The statement said Mutamba remained in office and was continuing to carry out his constitutional responsibilities.
“As we speak, the Commissioner-General is executing his constitutional duties as the Commissioner-General of Police,” the ZRP said.
Mutamba became Commissioner-General of Police after succeeding Godwin Matanga, who retired at the end of 2024. Mutamba had previously served in senior positions within the police force.
