The death toll from the Kariba Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) boat accident has risen to 92 after eight more bodies were recovered from Lake Kariba on Monday.
In a statement issued on August 17, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the latest recoveries were made by 1500 hours, bringing the number of confirmed fatalities to 92.
Police said extensive search and recovery operations have been underway since the accident occurred on August 11.
Police said officers have been working closely with other government agencies and stakeholders to coordinate operations on the lake and ensure that the identification of recovered bodies is handled swiftly and professionally.
The police have urged relatives seeking information on missing family members or other details related to the tragedy to visit the Command Centre in Kariba or their nearest police station.
The Kariba boat disaster is one of the country’s worst inland water tragedies in recent years, prompting a large-scale multi-agency rescue and recovery operation as authorities continue searching for those still unaccounted for.
