The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the names of 44 victims of the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA) passenger ferry disaster on Lake Kariba after they were formally identified by their next of kin.

The list includes the ferry captain, Sign Patsikadova, 59, as well as several young children, including victims aged one and two.

In a statement, police said the identification of other recovered bodies was still underway.

“The Police continues to work closely with relevant stakeholders and the affected families in the identification and recovery process,” the ZRP said.

Police said further information would be released as new developments emerge.

The disaster has prompted an ongoing recovery and identification operation on Lake Kariba, with authorities working to account for all those who were on board the ill-fated ferry.
