Air Zimbabwe’s recently relaunched Harare-London route has suffered a second disruption within a week after the national carrier announced the postponement of its latest scheduled service due to an operational issue.

In a notice issued on Sunday, the airline said Flight UM724, which was scheduled to depart Harare for London Gatwick, will now leave on Monday, 3 August, at 20:30 hours. The return service, Flight UM725, has also been rescheduled and will depart Gatwick on 4 August before arriving in Harare later that evening.

The airline attributed the change to an operational disruption but did not provide further details.

The latest postponement comes only days after Air Zimbabwe was forced to cancel another London-bound flight after the pilot assigned to the service reportedly fell ill. At the time, the airline did not disclose the nature of the illness, but the cancellation resulted in significant travel disruptions for passengers.

Both incidents have involved the Airbus A330-300 currently being used on the route. The aircraft, which is wet-leased from a Spanish carrier, was introduced when Air Zimbabwe resumed direct flights between Harare and London on 22 July, marking the airline’s return to the route after a 14-year absence.

The relaunch was widely viewed as a major milestone for the national carrier, which has been working to rebuild its international network and restore confidence in its long-haul operations. The airline is currently operating three weekly flights between Harare and London Gatwick.

However, the back-to-back disruptions have cast a spotlight on the operational challenges facing the route during its early weeks of service. Aviation observers note that while new or reinstated routes can experience initial operational difficulties, repeated disruptions so soon after launch are likely to attract close scrutiny from passengers and industry stakeholders.

The delays are particularly significant given the importance of the London route to Zimbabweans travelling for business, tourism, education and family visits, as well as to the airline’s broader efforts to strengthen its international presence.

Air Zimbabwe has apologised to affected passengers and said its customer service team is contacting travellers directly to provide updated flight information and alternative travel arrangements.

The airline has not indicated whether the latest disruption is expected to affect future scheduled services, but attention will now be focused on whether operations can stabilise as the carrier seeks to establish a reliable presence on the highly competitive Harare-London route.
